Plastic Storage Boxes
75They are undoubtedly the best of the best when it comes to storage. You can stack them, bend them, drop them, submerse them in water and their contents will usually come out unscathed. Indeed they are the king of the storage box world. But even a king has his weaknesses. Plastic storage boxes are terrible for the environment and possibly your health. They can outright KILL small children and did I mention they are bad for the environment? Read up on more interesting facts about plastic storage boxes right here!
Plastic Storage Boxes: The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly
First the good:
Plastic Storage boxes can be stacked or
placed on other less-than-robust (in my experience) shelving units that allow
for a very tidy and organized house or garage. Their unique shaped lids allow
for appareled stability when compared to other kinds of storage boxes. Only the
weight of the contents within really limit the stacking height.
While
Rubbermaid seems to be the go-to brand for plastic storage bins, there are a
wide variety of not-so-well known brands that offer more features and at a
reduced cost. To store my smelly solvents and engine parts in my garage, I
frequently use bins that have tabs on either end that clip the lid on. This
holds the lid secure and prevents any smells from escaping. Bins that offer an airtight seal are always preferable
over the alternatives. it's just one more option that could come in handy later
on down the road.
Plastic storage boxes offer incredible
strength for their size and weight. Thanks mostly due to their molded
structure, and also due to the durability of the plastics used in the
construction. Be wary of cheaper thin plastic boxes as they can crack or even
shatter if the plastic is too brittle.
Just like you should keep an out for
water and air tight boxes, keep an eye out for bins that have eyelets where you
can put a lock through. being able to lock your storage boxes allows for some
peace of mind if you've got kids or questionable characters unsupervised in
your house or yard.
Plastic Storage Boxes: The Bad
Plastic storage
boxes are terrible for the environment! the plastics used to make them will
NEVER degrade or take another form. Plastic is so durable that it just doesn't
break down. Furthermore, the toxic chemicals used in plastic containers are
very bad for you. For your regular storage needs, these chemicals are of little
concern, but if you have any edible items or even clothes stored inside these
containers, those chemicals can migrate from the plastic into your food and
onto your clothes. This is especially true if the storage boxes are subjected
to heat! You can check to see if the type of plastic used is safe or not by
reading the Recycling logo and the number inside it. Use this guide to decide
for yourself: Plastics and Carcinogens
Finally any small container that
children can climb in and get stuck are dangerous. The large plastic storage
boxes available can quite easily trap small children if they are playing
around. The lids often snap on very tightly and there is a serious potential
for danger. Be aware!
So now you've got a pretty good idea of what to look for when shopping for plastic storage boxes. With this knowledge you should have no problems finding the appropriate product to meet your storage needs!
